Atalanta stun Liverpool in Europa League

Serie A side cruise to 3-0 first-leg lead

Much-changed Liverpool were stunned by Serie A's sixth-placed side Atalanta at Anfield as the Italians cruised to a 3-0 first-leg lead in their Europa League last-16 tie on Thursday.

Gianluca Scamacca scored twice in the first half, including a stunning overhead kick, to give Atalanta a commanding lead.

Duvan Zapata added a third goal in the second half to leave Liverpool facing a mountain to climb in the second leg in Bergamo next week.

The result was a major shock for Liverpool, who had won their previous six matches in all competitions.

It was also a disappointing night for Jurgen Klopp, who fielded a much-changed team with one eye on Sunday's Premier League clash with Manchester United.

However, Atalanta were full value for their victory and showed why they are one of the most exciting teams in Serie A.
